FE has suffered a 40% cut since 2010. This has resulted in 1 million student places going and with this thousands of teaching posts. This is at a time where there are 700,000 16-24 year olds without education, training or employment and 15% of 16 to 65 year olds have no qualifications whatsoever.
Alongside these cuts the government have launched ‘area reviews’. The stated aim of these reviews will be to create ‘ fewer but more resilient’ colleges. Birmingham has one of the first reviews taking place now, and the outcome could be very serious – mergers, course closures, job losses and of course loss of student places. We need communities to get behind college staff and students to stand up for education.
There will be a public meeting taking place at Carr’s Lane Church, Birmingham, on Tuesday 8th December, 6pm. You can register for this here: http://www.eventbrite.com/e/birmingham-6th-form-and-fe-area-review-public-meeting-tickets-19636448145n
